This Week in NFL land....

This week in the NFL consisted of monstrous hits and controversial plays, leading to even bigger injuries.  This has been a hot topic in the NFL since the beginning of the season.  The question remains whether or not players should be penalized for these devastating tackles.  Here’s how it affected some of this week’s match ups:
Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings faced the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau field this Sunday, Favre’s old stomping ground.  The controversies started in the first quarter with a touchdown pass thrown by Packers quarterback, Aaron Rogers to Andrew Quarless.  The replay clearly showed Quarless unable to hold on to the ball, and the touchdown should not have counted. However, Minnesota failed to challenge the call.  It came back to haunt them in the 2nd quarter when Favre threw a touchdown pass to Visanthe Shiancoe that ultimately was overturned by a Packer’s challenge.  The replays revealed Shiancoe with possession.  Matters got worse for the Vikings in the 3rd quarter when Favre was intercepted and outside linebacker Brad Jones brought him down.  Afterwards, Favre began limping and lost his momentum.  The Vikings ended up losing 28-24 and the ramifications are lingering.
In his press conference, Favre discussed his disappointment with his performance.  He then left the podium limping.  As a result, there has been talk of Favre being benched this weekend against the New England Patriots.  Vikings backup Tavaris Jackson said that he is ready to play after watching Favre all this time.  Favre has never let injuries stop him, so this will be interesting to see.
Another key game was on Monday night between the New York Giants and their rivals, The Dallas Cowboys.  The game started out with two early interceptions thrown the by Giants quarterback Eli Manning.  This gave Dallas an early lead.  The energy quickly shifted when Giants’ linebacker Michael Boley pummeled Cowboy’s quarterback Tony Romo to the ground.  Romo suffered an injury to his clavicle that will leave him on the sidelines for six to eight weeks.  The game ended with a score of 41-35 in favor of the Giants.  The Cowboys, who had high hopes for this season, have fallen to 1-5, diminishing their Superbowl dreams.
Analysts have been arguing for weeks whether or not there should be penalties enforced for these major injuries.  Steve Young, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and ESPN analyst, has a strong opinion on this matter.  As a former quarterback who received many big hits in his career, he feels that these players should face consequences.  Other analysts feel that this will get in the way of the tradition of football.  This is an issue that could persist for some time.
This week proved to be another interesting week with key plays and unfortunate injuries.  In the coming weeks, let’s hope these injuries are far and few between.  Regardless of the team, it is never a joy to see someone in pain.
